{"id":4772,"date":"2021-07-10T14:53:11","date_gmt":"2021-07-10T19:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alzand.com\/?p=4772"},"modified":"2021-07-10T14:53:11","modified_gmt":"2021-07-10T19:53:11","slug":"rice-stadium-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alzand.com\/?p=4772","title":{"rendered":"Rice Stadium Concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On March 17th, 2021, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, Shepherd School of Music composition students participated in a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.rice.edu\/2021\/03\/29\/bright-lights-big-sound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unique concert<\/a> of new music at Rice University&#8217;s 50,000 seat <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rice_Stadium_(Rice_University)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">football stadium<\/a>. Five new, site-specific works were composed by graduate students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickysohn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicky Sohn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jakesandridge.coffeecup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jake Sandridge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graceannlee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grace Ann Lee<\/a> and Daniel Leibovic, and by undergraduate <a href=\"https:\/\/alexmorenocomposer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Moreno<\/a>\u2014works especially designed to be performed within the &#8220;extreme distanced&#8221; environment of the stadium. The collaborative project involved the school&#8217;s brass and percussion students, who rehearsed and performed the works over the course of several weeks, assisted by staff conductor (and light saber brandisher) <a href=\"https:\/\/music.rice.edu\/faculty\/jerry-hou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerry Hou<\/a>. The result was a memorable and unique concert on a massive spatial scale, occasioned by performance restrictions in the era of COVID.
