{"id":6661,"date":"2025-03-01T11:48:16","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T16:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alzand.com\/?p=6661"},"modified":"2025-03-01T11:48:16","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T16:48:16","slug":"edmonton-opera-residency-in-dawson-city-yukon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alzand.com\/?p=6661","title":{"rendered":"Edmonton Opera Residency in Dawson City, Yukon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmontonopera.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edmonton Opera<\/a> continued its collaborative partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/yukonartscentre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yukan Arts Centre<\/a> to sponsor a week-long residency\/workshop in the Yukon. The February 16th-23rd residency, hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/kiac.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Klondike Institute of Art and Culture<\/a>, supported singers Elizabeth Polese, Rachael McAuley, and Connor Hoppenbrouwers, along with pianist Spencer Kryzanowski and me in a series of rehearsals, community outreach and performances in the beautiful and historic gold rush town of Dawson City.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6673\" src=\"http:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alzand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Dawson2.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Performance activities included an &#8220;Opera Pub&#8221; at the Westminster Hotel and Tavern. AKA <i>The Pit<\/i> to an appreciative audience of opera lovers and soon-to-be opera lovers. The pub performance concluded with my Yukon piano debut, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elizabethpolese.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Polese<\/a> in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GXwrgbvaiOc?feature=shared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Song I Wish I&#8217;d Written<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>A concert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yukon-news.com\/entertainment\/evening-at-the-opera-enjoyed-in-dawson-city-7848587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performance<\/a> at the KIAC Ballroom at D\u00ebn\u00e4k\u00e4r Zhoin included several pieces: a new aria, <i>You and I<\/i> from an in-progress opera project (<i>The Book of Tales<\/i>), the premiere of a new song on Amy Lowell&#8217;s poem <i>Carrefour<\/i>, and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/alzand.com\/?page_id=5990\">Your Letter Pleased Me Greatly<\/a><\/i> \u2013all performed by Polese and pianist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spencerpiano.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spencer Kryzanowsi<\/a>. Mezzo-soprano <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelmcauley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachael McAuley<\/a> performed with Kryzanowski <a href=\"https:\/\/alzand.com\/?page_id=5046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two Songs<\/a> on texts of Reg Huston.<\/p>\n<p>Also presented in Dawson City were two of my comic 3-voice catches: <i>Kraft Kanon<\/i> on the ingredients in <i>Kraft Dinner<\/i>\u2122 (for Americans: Mac &amp; Cheese!); and the world premiere of <i>Changing of the Guard<\/i> written especially for the occasion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>By<\/strong> all accounts it&#8217;s <strong>true<\/strong>: you can&#8217;t <strong>buy<\/strong> happiness with <strong>dough<\/strong>.
